A post over at Moving to Vancouver made me remember this moment from Montreal...
So, I'm sitting patiently, waiting for Martina (yes, THAT Martina) to arrive. She was the speaker at the closing session. The woman sitting behind me, kind of just talking to anyone within earshot, says something about wanting to move to the States. Huh? I, of course, turned around and said something like, "What?" I mean here I am at an international conference on LGBT human rights and this other attendee - Canadian attendee - wants to move to the States? As I find myself wanting to say so often these days, WTF?
Well, she starts telling me how she had moved from Ontario to the Yukon to live with her girlfriend whom she had met on-line, that she makes better money in the Yukon, but that she'd make more money in the States. Oh, and, the Yukon is pretty nice, they even have a Wal-Mart. Had I just walked into some kind of Jon Stewart set-up? Yeah, she said, some people don't like Wal-Mart, but she does. After all, when they opened it gave her clients - turns out she's a social worker! - all kinds of job opportunities. Nice. Anyway, it went from weird to worse and eventually Martina showed up.
Reading WEB's post about deep integration made me think of that one. Again I say - how about she gets to come south and I get to go north? Not that far north, but north!

mseh,
The Deep Integration thing does bother me - Jeez, our reason for leaving is to distance ourselves from a lot of the things the US has come to stand for. The more I read in published books and online the more enlightened and disgusted I become with our "homeland". I really think a revision - scratch that, "honest account" - of American History is in order for the youth of this country.
As to the woman who wants to move to the States from Canada: There is a place for all viewpoints in the world, but I have to agree with you: WTF?!?!?
WTF? is such an appropriate response. Some people are completely clueless.
Heck, half my family voted for Bush in 2000. I nearly disowned them all! (kidding)
