Nightmare

Short story - we're now in a very, very ugly dispute with our builder. Thus, I have made the building blog "private." Some of you whom I know checked in every now and again have received an "invitation." If you didn't, and you'd like to check it out, drop me a note and I'm happy add you.

I have one tiny piece of good news and that is blogging. As some of you know, in that blog I was able to document the process, including some references to important conversations, etc. I am now able to use the blog to respond to the builder's assertion that we owe him - when the fact is that not only have they not completed the job, as he asserts, but that they owe us. So blogging may ultimately have a pivotal role in resolving this dispute. We'll see.

This morning I hated every square metre of New Brunswick and almost every soul who lives here. But, having had three very, very good conversations with three of the sub-contractors, who know what a nightmare this has been, has restored some of my faith. Were it not for not wanting to disrupt my son (he loves his room, his school, his yard...), I was ready to pack it in. Yes, it's been that horrible. You might not be able to imagine it, but it's true.

Anyway, that's the latest here. I spent two hours in my lawyer's office in on-again/off-again hysterics. Then I visited the sub-contractors. Now I have an arm's length list of work and/or repairs that have not been completed, a need for a new lawyer, a lien on the house, and money that they owe us that we may never see. Are we having fun yet?

Good grief, MSEH, this sounds awful!

We're so sorry you're having to go through this clusterf_ck with the not-too-cool builder.

Hopefully, the documentation you have via the blog and your no doubt detailed records will suffice to resolve the issues to your satisfaction.

We're thinking of you, and hope it all works out soon . . . .

The storm before the calm? Sorry to read of your troubles. Surely the detailed and dated blogging will contribute to a speedy and satisfactory conclusion.

Honey, I feel your pain. J and I were just discussing your situation and the mess that unscrupulous contractors 'build' in the guise of a 'home'.

We hope that the situation is resolved soon with minimum scaring.

Your blogs have provided us with a lot of insight on both the move to Canada, and building our own home there. We hope that they help you now!

MSEH I am so sorry about all of this. If Diane can help you in anyway with her Engineering expertise please ask. Building a house is always horrible much less after immigrating to a new country. Our thoughts are with you.

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate your thoughts. Let me know, if you haven't received one already, if you want an "invite" to the blog. I just posted about 30 photos as documentation of the "completion."

Mary - The one good thing I can say with some degree of confidence (I think!) is that everything we are dealing with is a matter of cosmetics, not structure. Since I watched virtually everything go up, and it's an ICF house, it seems solid as, well, concrete.

Thanks, again!

M: I'm so sorry to hear about your continuing troubles. I thought your lawyer was working everything out. Now you need a new lawyer? Ouch! Hope everything works out by spring, so you and your family can really enjoy the good weather.
