The Mouths of Babes

A few moments ago, 7YO and I had the Democratic convention on the television. An obnoxious GOP commercial aired. He said, "That's Hillary Clinton" and asked something about it being "Obama against Clinton." He's never heard of McCain. I explained that the contest had been between them, but that now it was Obama v. McCain, a friend of Bush. He asked, "Why don't you like George Bush?" This, btw, is old news to him. When he was 3 he could chant, "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, George Bush has got to go." But, I responded by saying that I don't like Bush because he took the country to war by lying and people had died. Then - going out on a limb - I said that he also didn't believe that kids should be able to have two moms or two dads. He did his, "Grrrrr..." and said, "He has a peanut brain" and "his dad George Bush has half a peanut brain." Okay, so he got that backwards. Still, talk about on target! In the car he prefers news to music. As I write, he's falling asleep in the chair, half watching Maine public television coverage. But, don't ask him to read or write. Go figure.

Does this mean 7YO is going to miss Hillary?

Guess you'll have to record it for him . . . . :)

Your response actually kind of concerns me... when I was his age, I asked my mom what abortion was, and she told me it's when a mother kills her baby because she doesn't want it.

I often think when you are teaching your kids about *big* subjects like politics, history, morality, etc., it might be good to present both sides of the story and let the kid come to their own conclusions.

Not that there really IS another side to the story when it comes to Dubya. I'm just sayin'... LOL

Let's see...

"kills her baby" - I see two points of debate there: "kills" and "baby."

I'm not sure what to identify as "both sides." He didn't ask, "What do people think about Bush?" or "Will history think he was a good president?" He asked why I don't like him.

1. He lied in taking the country to war. Not much debate about that any more, save from the blindly obedient.

2. People died. I don't think there's been debate about that.

3. Under his watch, his influence, one state after another has continued to pass anti-GLBT and anti-GLBT parent legislation.

Call me crazy, but when explaining my opinion I don't feel the need to explain what others think.

Sounds fair to me.

Does Bush ever present both sides?

I am forever grateful that I was taught the truth, and not "both sides".

I was taught that war is wrong. That war for no reason is wronger still.

I was taught that all people are equal.

I was taught that human beings own their own bodies and must be free to make their own choices.

About some issues, there is no other side. What's the other side of slavery? Of Jim Crow? Of the Holocaust?

Good on 7YO and good on you!!
