Banking

I didn't have time to do this while actually IN Canada... Does anyone know if I can open a bank account in Canada while still in the US? And, do I need an SIN in order to open an account? Just thought someone out there might know. Thanks!

"drf" and I opened two accounts at HSBC in Vancouver over two years ago, and we're still in the US - unfortunately! One in Canadian funds and one is US funds. Makes it quite easy to transfer/convert funds between accounts. (Plus using our US bank ATM card at an HSBC machine results in zero fees - quite amazing.)

No SIN # required . . . .

You don't need an SIN to open a bank account. Many banks do require a Canadian address.

I can't comment on the SIN because we used it to open ours however ScotiaBank now has us living with Nick and Mason. :o)

We were looking to opening an account at RBC Centura. www.rbccentura.com. They have a branch office in Charleston SC. Their web site has page called "US banking for Canadians" and this phrase: "We believe that banking should be convenient and accessible on both sides of the border." We will see just how convenient they can be.

RBC Royal Bank of Canada, do not require a Canadian address. We opened one 3 years before we arrived in Canada. No SIN required either. Good online banking, and can open a US funds account too.
