Importation of Vehicles
I was just perusing the information about exporting/importing vehicles. Both the Canadian and US sites mention providing documents to US Customs 72 hours prior to export. What do folks know about this? Did you fax things in advance? I know that Tom and Emilio mentioned this in their great "to do" list. Do we just contact the US people at the border where we'll be crossing? Any insight is most appreciated. Thanks!

hi you, yes indeed you have to fax the docs 72 hours before landing to the USA side, not the Canadian. If you go to:
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/ports/
You can choose which port you are exiting from, I'd call them and make sure the fax number listed in the link is the correct one. Sometimes this information isn't 100% updated all the time. Hope this helps a little! take care!!
Thanks - I wasn't sure about the 72 hours notice. Just seems a bit bureaucratically cumbersome. Thanks, again!
friends of ours just bought a harley in vegas and brought it home to canada ... they just faxed all their docs to US customs 72 hours ahead of time. apparently it took them 10 minutes at the US side but much longer at the CDN side. not sure why.
Melissa,
Nick had a good tip for us, when you fax make sure you print a receipt of the date and time of the fax and bring it with you. They had real jerk at the US side giving them a hard time.
thanks again!
FYI...I exported a car and a trailer from US to Canada at the end of June. I was told that you don't fax the docs to the border crossing itself, but to a processing center in Whitlash, MT. The fax number is 406.432.5528. Customs and Border Protection at your border crossing can access your docs from the MT focal point. We had no trouble in our case, having faxed the docs about a week ahead of time.
Also, you can fax your docs to Whitlash up to 90 days ahead of the date you plan to export the vehicles, but at least 72 hours beforehand is required.
