I'm not sure what I think about this... I just learned that it is now Minnesota law that schools have five "lockdown drills" each year. Today my five year old will learn the "safe zones" in his classroom and that he must be absolutely quiet if asked to go there. They will, apparently, be told in an "age appropriate" way, that this is what they will do if there is an intruder in the school.
On the one hand, given recent events, this seems like a good thing. On the other hand, I'm not sure what I think of a five year old having to think about the possibility of an intruder coming into his school and how to protect himself. I tried to analogize to the nuke drills I remember as a kid, but I can't help but think he has a much better idea - and, thus, greater potential for fear - of an intruder than I had of a nuclear bomb.
This world...

Scary the world we live in, isn't it? It's a shame that kids of such a young age are exposed to this atmosphere of fear. One can't help but wonder if guns were outlawed totally in this country if there would be a need for these actions . . . .
I remember being afraid when I heard the test of the "Emergency Broadcasting System" on TV in the early 60's.... "this is a test, this is only a test...." I always wondered what I would do if I weren't watching TV when the REAL warning was issued and I wouldn't know what to do.
I travelled to your blog through some links in the dog sledding community.
I've searched through your blog quickly and can't tell if you have moved to Canada yet....
A could of very Canadian words you should know.... "deek", "colour" spelled with a "u", "theatre" spelled with an "re".... and for those of British decent "Mum" spelled with a "u"
If you're here... Welcome to Canada! If you're not, hope you make it soon.
Hi, susane and thanks for your post. I'm curious about the dog sledding connection! Perhaps someone out there has links to any blogs with Canada in the title?
As for spelling, yes, I'm familiar with those differences. I've tended to use "theatre" for years, unless it's a specific "theater" that uses the "er" version. What's "deek?"
And, alas, we're still in the U.S... We'll be there one of these days!
Thanks for reading!
My generation didn't have these types of drills, how sad that they are back again.
What worries me is the "keep quiet and don't question" aspect. This "training" could be used for other purposes and given the powers the Executive Branch of the federal government is taking ...
